The risograph print look

Published 28 September 2026.

The risograph look makes the reel feel like a zine come alive. Two or three bold inks print as separate layers that don't quite line up, overlapping into new colours where they cross, with coarse grain and halftone dots on paper. Type is chunky and often cropped by the edge of the frame. It's got the energy of a gig poster.

A 15-second vertical reel we made for our own product, ScriptGrain, in the risograph print look, with big beat. Yours can run to 30 or 60 seconds, or be rebuilt in 16:9 and 4:5. Make one like this

Where the look comes from

The Risograph is a Japanese stencil duplicator made by Riso Kagaku. Riso's own timeline shows the first Risograph-branded products in 1980, the fully automatic Risograph 007 in 1984 and the first digital model in 1986. It prints one spot colour at a time: as Purdue University Libraries explain, each colour is a separate ink drum, and the paper goes back through for each layer.

That's where the slightly misaligned layers and the overprinted colours come from. Riso itself notes the machines have become popular with artists around the world, and riso studios, zines and art-book fairs have kept the look alive.

What's in this reel

Brands it suits, and ones it doesn't

It suits independent shops, cafés, bookshops, record labels, studios, events, zines and creative tools; any brand with a bit of hand-made character. It also makes a digital product feel warmer than it otherwise would.

It can look scrappy for enterprise software, finance or healthcare, where buyers expect polish. Those are better served by the Swiss editorial grid or blueprint looks.

Music that pairs with it

Start from this reel and yours keeps its look, its scene order, its pacing and its kind of music. The words, facts, colours and logo are yours, only facts you've approved go on screen, and nothing from ScriptGrain carries over. It's priced like any other reel: the Short is £9, the Reel £29 and the Bundle, cut for 16:9, 9:16 and 4:5, £49.
