Launch videos for Product Hunt
Published 28 September 2026. Product Hunt's posting rules checked against its help centre on 28 September 2026.
A Product Hunt launch needs two kinds of video. One is a 16:9 cut uploaded to YouTube for the gallery on your launch page, because Product Hunt only accepts YouTube links there. The others are short vertical and 4:5 cuts you post on X and LinkedIn through the day to send people to the launch. Both should show the real product, fast, to an audience that has seen thousands of launches.
How Product Hunt handles video
According to Product Hunt's help centre, videos in the gallery have to be YouTube links: the full URL, not a shortened one, and the video mustn't be private. Upload it before launch day and check it plays when you're signed out. Gallery images are suggested at 1270 × 760, and the gallery needs at least two images before it shows. Your post goes live at 12:01 AM Pacific time and the day runs on Pacific time, so have every cut exported and scheduled before then.
What to show, beat by beat
People browsing Product Hunt are makers, early adopters and investors, and they've seen every "meet the future of" opening there is. What will they stop for? The product itself, working. For a 30 to 60-second gallery video:
- The one-line pitch, on screen in the first seconds. The same line as your tagline, so the page and the video agree.
- The product working. Real screens, in the order someone would use them. This audience will forgive a plain look far sooner than a fake one.
- What's new today. If it's a relaunch or a big update, say what changed.
- Who made it, briefly. Product Hunt is a maker community. A name and a line about why you built it goes further here than on most platforms.
- The offer. Free tier, launch-day price, or simply "try it", with your web address.
The launch-day social cuts are shorter: 15 seconds, the pitch, one screen, and "we're live on Product Hunt today".
Which shape and length for which channel
- Product Hunt gallery (via YouTube): 16:9, 30 to 60 seconds.
- X on launch day: 16:9 or 9:16, 15 to 30 seconds. See our X video specs.
- LinkedIn on launch day: 4:5, 15 to 30 seconds. See the LinkedIn video specs.
Facts first
Product Hunt comments are public, and makers read the fine print. A claim in your video that your site doesn't back up will get asked about, in public, on the busiest day you'll have all year. Stick to what your product page already says, and keep launch-day offers identical in the video, the post and the checkout.
Mistakes to avoid
- A private or unlisted-by-mistake video. Check the YouTube link from a signed-out browser.
- A shortened link. Product Hunt's help centre says shortened links won't load in the gallery.
- A long intro. Gallery visitors click through quickly; get to the product in the first few seconds.
- A different pitch in every place. Tagline, gallery video and social cuts should say the same thing.
How Launch Video Maker would make it
Give us your product's web address and we'll read your pages, list the facts worth showing for you to approve, and produce the reel with music and sound effects. The Bundle (£49) makes one reel in 16:9 for YouTube and the gallery, 9:16 for vertical posts and 4:5 for LinkedIn, all from the same approved facts, so every launch-day post says the same thing. Allow time for the reel to be made and checked before launch day, and remember you get 3 free edits if a line needs changing. Start with your web address.
